The USS Midway has a large number 41 painted on the side representing the order in which it was built. It was built in 1945 and was the 41st ship built in the U.S. The Midway is 1,001 feet in length and weighs approximately 70,000 tons.
The USS Midway provided 47 years of service to our country and even served in the Vietnam War. The ship operated from 1945 and sailed in every ocean around the world to 1992, at which time it was decommissioned. The ship was named in honor of a battle occurring in WW II on Midway Island, which is located in the Pacific, in which the Allied forces were victorious.
The USS Midway also served during humanitarian efforts, such as in 1975, when it helped evacuate the South Vietnamese who were fleeing their country. It again delivered
emergency supplies and rescued U.S. military personnel in 1991 during the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines. As a result of the Midway’s impressive career and service, many refer to the ship as “Midway Magic” and it has been the recipient of numerous awards for outstanding service and is now displayed as a museum to honor its fine history.
