The Del Mar horse races are officially in full swing! The event’s opening day last Wednesday brought in more than 45,000 visitors, both San Diego residents and race fans from around the country. With the races running daily from mid July through early September, the Del Mar races truly represent when the surf meets the turf for summer fun in San Diego.
If you’re thinking about heading to Del Mar to view the thoroughbreds in action, racing is held daily with the exception of Mondays and Tuesdays. Gates typically open at 11:30am with post time for the first race at 2pm. On Fridays, gates open at 2pm and first post is at 4pm. General and early bird parking is $10, preferred parking is $15 and valet is $20. Patrons can also arrive on the Amtrak/coaster and take the shuttle over to the grounds or can reserve private town car service in San Diego.
The races are also hosting a variety of events for individuals of all ages. On Saturday, August 3rd, come to the races to enjoy the Gourmet Food Truck Festival which will be held from noon to 6pm. On Sunday, August 25th, it is long sleeve t-shirt giveaway day and the $1 Million Pacific Classic Race Day. Additionally, if you can head over to the racetrack midweek, you can enjoy Free & Easy Wednesdays where stretch run admission, programs and seating is free with half price domestic draft beers, regular sized sodas and hot dogs. Fridays will also feature live-music at the track’s Friday concert series.
There are also many options for food at the races. Concessions stands are located throughout with offerings ranging from carved sandwiches and fish and chips to pizza and ice cream. There are also 5 restaurants on the premises; however if you are planning to dine at a restaurant that is trackside, reservations are required ahead of time. Draft beers and specialty cocktails are available at all dining options.
