California has always been a forerunner in the nation when it comes to green awareness. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that when San Diego started thinking about an airport expansion, the Airport Authority placed priority on energy conservation and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
The renovated airport opened last month with ten new gates equipped to accommodate passengers with more utility and comfort. Travelers can enjoy cup holders, USB ports and electrical outlets in their seating areas and a variety of local restaurants and stores were added to all terminals to enhance user experience.
Passengers can also breathe a sigh of relief upon arrival at the airport, by taking advantage of 27 curbside kiosks and 31 skycap counters that will expedite the check-in process. Additionally, streamlined security checkpoints offer more accessible lanes for peak travel periods. Topping off the extreme make-over is the addition of a 9200 square foot concession area called Sunset Cove.
The airport’s lofty ambitions did not stop there. From the onset, the Airport Authority decided to take the actions required for certification from LEED, (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) from the Green Leadership Council. In order to qualify for such an esteemed nationally accepted certification, designers must focus on conserving water, energy efficiency, and sustainable material selection. The project, tagged as the Green Build implemented these requirements by practical design for decrease in water usage, reduction of energy consumption and the use of alternative energy sources.
The great news is the Airport Authority was able to accomplish all of the above while still coming in 45 million under budget, proving that sustainable building is a cost-effective endeavor. The Green Build accomplished all their goals, successfully achieved silver certification from LEED, and are now under consideration for the more elusive gold certification.
