Along with the San Diego Airport’s recent renovations and commitment to enhancing traveler experience, it is now offering a program called Pre Check which aims to decrease time spent in security lines.
All travelers are familiar with the airport’s current security process. No liquids are allowed through the check point unless they are in a small 3.4oz (100ml) bottle or less, and are contained in a clear, plastic zip-top bag. Passengers must also remove items such as shoes, hats, jackets, belts and other personal items. For those traveling with a laptop, the laptop must be taken out of the luggage or carrier to be screened separately. For most, this can be a lengthy and frustrating process.
San Diego is one of the many airports across the nation that is starting to offering the Pre Check program. Thanks to the Pre Check program, an exemption from the screening process is possible. These select passengers will be allowed to skip the removal of shoes and other clothing, as well as the screening of liquid items, laptops, etc. Volunteers who meet strict requirements and undergo an extensive background check can sign up for Pre Check as well as:
- US citizens of frequent flier program who have been invited by a participating airline (Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways and Virgin America).
- US citizens who are members of a CBP Trusted Traveler Program
- Canadian citizens who are members of NEXUS
- Passengers 12 and under traveling with eligible passengers
Anyone with past or current violations of customs or immigration laws or those with outstanding warrants are not eligible for the Pre Check program. TSA will also continue to perform routines screening throughout the airport and no single individual will be granted guaranteed expedited screening. By doing so, an element of randomness will be maintained, allowing TSA to continue to provide a high level of security at the airport.
