On Thursday January 23, 2014 a San Diego traffic court commissioner dismissed a citation received by Cecilia Abadie for wearing Google Glass while driving. The San Diego transportation case, which has attracted national attention over the new technology, has brought to light the controversy of whether or not Google Glass does contribute to the trend of drivers paying less attention to the road.
While the Commissioner found there was not enough evidence to prove that Abadie was operating the computerized glasses behind the wheel, we can almost guarantee there will be similar cases in the future. Not only does Google plan to integrate new features like turn-by-turn directions into its design, the number of Google Glass owners is expected to increase exponentially when the product is released to the public later this year. (Currently, there are only about 10,000 people nationwide who have Google Glass, more commonly referred to as Glass Explorers.)
Many people in favor of the high-tech Google Glass argue individuals with GPS navigation and other window mounted features pose just as much risk, if not more than Google Glass wearers. Some GPS units may even be more difficult to control while driving. And for those who are traveling to a new and unfamiliar location, Google Glass may actually have the power to help them better navigate the roads, especially if they are familiar with the technology and use it regularly.
As a transportation company here in San Diego, we provide chauffeured service to LAX, Long Beach Airport and a variety of destinations outside San Diego. While we always have GPS units in our vehicles just in case, the safest driver is always the one that pulls over, and doesn’t let technology distract them while driving. For many, it’s easier said than done, however at Citi Transportation, the safety of our passengers is always the top priority!
